5 Questions with C2HR President Dave Crossen

On January 1 Dave Crossen, SVP of HR for NBCUniversal, stepped into the role of C2HR President. Dave is an 18-year veteran at NBCUniversal where he is responsible for all aspects of human resources for the Broadcasting and Advertising Sales division which has 5,000 employees.  While Dave studied economics at the University of Manchester, his career took him a different route. Dave brings more than 25 years of human resources experience to his C2HR leadership role.  To introduce you to Dave, we invited him to share his HR predictions, vision for C2HR and the person he’d most like to meet.

2020 presented employers with an array of exceptional challenges and opportunities, and HR strategically responded with agility, empathy and resilience. What changes to the world of work do you believe are here to stay?

Dave: I would certainly agree that HR as a function really stepped up to face the challenges of 2020, and I'm very proud of what we collectively accomplished as HR professionals. We were called upon to handle everything from crisis management to realigning our businesses for a new normal, with a lot of unexpected challenges in between.

The changes to the world of work that we have experienced are already beyond anyone's expectations, fueled by necessity, ingenuity and people's enduring ability to adapt.

I believe that for the fortunate people who have the option, some form of hybrid WFH arrangement is here to stay. I also believe that the prominence of Business Continuity/Crisis Management as a core part of any organization's plan is something that will endure, as we have learned the hard way that having expertise in this area can make a real difference.

Also, I predict that it will be a long time before we stop hearing "You're on mute" at least 5 times in every meeting!

What’s the best advice you ever received?

Dave: I had to think hard about this one! It’s a bit of a cliché but I'm most thankful for the person who convinced me to write down a personal vision outlining some broad goals and aspirations for my life and career. It wasn’t a 'natural act' for me. I did it and I believe that it helped me strive for some of the career and personal goals I have achieved.

Who is the one person you’d like to meet?

Dave: I've always been impressed with President Obama. To meet someone who has been both a ground breaker and had such an influence on a generation of people would be fascinating. If I can have a "two-fer", I'd ask to meet Michelle too!

What’s your superpower?

Dave: I’d say it is my ability to be comfortable 'in the grey'. As HR leaders, we face complex problems every day, and I know that often the best solutions require consideration from multiple angles. I'm known for asking the 'devil's advocate' question and always forcing myself to think of three or four options to solve a problem (Tip: "Do nothing" is often on the list).

What’s your vision for C2HR in the year ahead?

Dave: Given the external environment, we will continue to focus on adding value for all of our members and stakeholders through regular events, resources and collaboration opportunities that bring together HR professionals from different companies. My top goal is around growth—both in terms of engagement and the breadth of influence we can have in our respective organizations, as what we do is so critical at this time.

I would like to thank each C2HR member company and individual member for your support and interest in our programs. I’d also like to recognize the hard-working and dedicated members of the C2HR Board of Directors. Here's to a brighter future!
